Organisation of Child-to-Child Activities

Our activities began in September 1997 and involve a group of schools in the district. Funding is provided by our own organisation and by a partner organisation. As well as providing funding, our partner organisation also provides materials such as books and magazines. Some international organisations also supply us with the kinds of materials just mentioned.

Children and Adult Personnel Involved in Child-to-Child Activities

The activities take place in rural areas. More than 400 children and about 40 adults are involved. The children are of primary school age and include both boys and girls. They are aged from 8 to 14 years. The adult workers are primary teachers.

Main Purpose of the Child-to-Child Activities

The main purposes of our Child-to-Child activities are:

1. For children to transmit health education to other children in the schools, and for these children to transmit that information to their families and the community at large;

2. To promote children's rights and an awareness of gender issues.

How Child-to-Child Activities are Introduced and Children's Participation

Child-to-Child activities are introduced through the Child-to-Child health organisation and through classroom teaching. Children are encouraged to think and make their own decisions, e.g., through discussions, surveys in the community, open days, stories, poems, songs, dances, demonstrations, drama, campaigns, etc. We use the six-step approach. Some children are shy about participating at stages 3, 4 and 5, especially where the children concerned are not able to express themselves in the language used. Nevertheless, we aim to promote children’s acquisition of thinking, communication and behavioural skills.

School-based Child-to-Child Activities

25 schools in the district are involved in Child-to-Child activities. On Mondays and Fridays, the schools usually have health education talks by the teachers. Poems and songs may be introduced by the Child-to-Child group. Health topics are also integrated into other subjects such as maths, social science and language.

Community and Parental Involvement in Child-to-Child Activities

Parents get involved in the open days we run. They may also get involved in the community surveys and campaigns run by children.

Health and Education Working Together

Our programme only involves education professionals. Sometimes health professionals use Child-to-Child in their campaigns.

Monitoring and Evaluation of Child-to-Child Activities

We monitor Child-to-Child activities during school open days, school twinning programmes and during assemblies. Many activities are presented during these times. Activities are assessed and progress is measured. Many children have changed as a result of the Child-to-Child activities. Additionally, parents and teachers in the community have learnt many things from their children.

Training

Training is provided for teachers and children. Trainers are experienced people with the necessary qualifications to carry out training. Content varies depending on the needs of the trainees, but always includes Child-to-Child methodology.

Use, Adaptation, Translation and Production of Child-to-Child Materials

We use Children for Health. This contains the information which is necessary for the generation of our activities. We have also formulated our own guide programmes for schools, and have produced some helpful handouts.
