Child-to-Child activities in Mine Awareness Programmes
In common with other countries which have experienced recent conflict, UNICEF’s Mine Awareness Group uses Child-to-Child approaches in their school programme in Kosovo. The activities concentrate on both male and female children aged 10-14 years of age. They are encouraged to disseminate information to the younger children within the school. The majority of agencies target the Albanian community, but this has been extended to the Serbian Roma communities.
Mine/UXO awareness education was incorporated into the school curriculum from the academic year 2000. Nearly 200 schools are involved, all of which have high contamination listing. Activities are introduced through classroom teaching. The Child-to-Child six-step method is not used, but a three-step method is. Our partners aim to develop skills for communicating and behaving, especially around dangerous areas. They also aim to develop practical skills, through games, writing poetry, singing songs, and making posters, etc.
