Publication of Child to Child readers in Sgaw Karen
Drum Publication Group
Drum publications are a local NGO who began Child-to-Child activities in 1998
producing health education books in the Karen language based on Child-to-Child
reading books. They work in both refugee and rural contexts. About 15,000 children are included, along with 500 teachers. Children from 43 schools participate. The children are of primary-school age and are of ethnic Karen background. The adult
workers are all primary school teachers. Readers are all distributed free of charge and used widely in the refugee camps in Thailand along the borders with Myanmar.
The NGO reports:
‘Our main purpose is to provide teachers with some good materials so that they
will be encouraged to start teaching health education. As future priorities/interests,
we hope to get involved in promoting gender issues, inclusive education and
the promotion of children's rights. We are attempting to make health education a proper school subject.’
By January 2004 seven readers had been translated and slightly adapted, e.g. A simplecure; Dirty water, Accidents, The Market Dentist, Not just a Cold, Teaching Thomas and Down with Fever. 15,000 copies of readers had been distributed.
