Relevant background information
Between 1990 and 1995 the Ministry of Education’s in-service division incorporated Child-to-Child activities within its workshops as part of the child survival and development programme. Child-to-Child, London helped to facilitate some of these. Previously to this, nearly 200,000 titles of the first six Child-to-Child readers had been distributed to schools as part of the World Bank textbook project. Tanzania still continues to order the full range of books in smaller numbers – 5,000 in 2004. Some material in Swahili exists, though the readers were not translated, being used as part of the school English syllabus. A major Child-to-Child school-based programme had also been launched in Zanzibar which was supported by the Aga Khan Foundation.
Health Action Promotion Association (HAPA)
Child-to-Child activities are introduced through schools and health clubs in Singida and Tabora, Tanzania using the six-step approach and Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST) approaches. The main themes that the programme focuses on are water, sanitation and hygiene. Child-to-Child materials, particularly the readers, are translated and adapted in Kiswahili and teaching aids are made out of local resources. Read more
Note 2
Use of Child-to-Child materials in the National Health Education programme
1. Health Promotion in Our Schools, in English for Tanzania. The Tanzanian National School Health Programme has reproduced the Child-to-Child Trust's book Health Promotion in Our Schools. The Tanzanian version is in English and contains most of the original text. The illustrations have been modified to make them more appropriate for African settings.
The Programme has printed and distributed the book to over 500 school health coordinators and government authorities at district, regional and national levels within Tanzania.
2. The Child-to-Child readers also sell regularly to schools in Tanzania. 5000 were ordered in 2004.
