Organisation
Child-to-Child activity organised by Plan Philippines started in selected schools. The major activity for the year (2002) was the training of teachers, school supervisors and district nurses, all of whom will be closely involved in the planning and implementation of the project. The workshop relating to this was conducted in April 2002. The four participants prepared their action plan to be reviewed and shared in their respective district/schools. Our activities will be conducted in partnership with the Department of Education, the Local Government Unit particularly, Kapangan-Banguet. Funding for the activities is provided by Plan International, the Department of Education and the Local Government of Kapangan. Schools are based in an upland rural area. The programme targets children from Elementary level grades 4, 5 and 6.
The Activities
The main aim of our Child-to-Child programme is to enhance promotion of school based health and nutrition through the Child-to-Child approach. In doing so, the programme is also interested in confronting issues around gender, inclusive education and the promotion of children's rights.
Child-to-Child activities are introduced through children's health clubs, which are organised with the support of the school. Child leaders are trained as health facilitators/resource persons. Children are encouraged to think and make their own decisions about health action, and to take action. The programme seeks to develop a number of skills in children, including communication, facilitation, planning and decision-making skills.
Activities are school-based enhancing the existing Teacher-Parent and Child Approach of the Department of Education. This approach is integrated in our school curriculum. A number of schools are involved, one particularly in the Benguet area, but a total of 5 for Plan Philippines as a whole.
Shared Involvement in Child-to-Child Activities
Parents participate in community-based orientation and support their children's participation. In time, they will also provide feedback on the precise nature of their children's involvement.
There is involvement from both health and education professionals in the planning, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of our Child-to-Child activities. Teachers, the District Supervisor and the District Nurse are all involved.
Training and use of Materials
Training is provided for teachers, health workers and local government partners. Training is carried out by Plan-trained staff, as well as by trained teachers. The content of training of teachers focuses on the history of Child-to-Child, Child-to-Child principles, the Child-to-Child six-step approach, interactive methodologies and VIPP (Visualization in Participatory Programmes). Materials used include the Child-to-Child activity sheets (Resource Book 2), Children as Partners in Health, Facts for Life, The programme has adapted Child-to-Child materials which focus on child participation using the Child-to-Child six-step approach.
