Organisation of Child-to-Child Activities
The programme started in 1998 with two projects with different goals. The first project was related to working with children about mine awareness in the Northern part of West Bank especially Jenin, Topas, and Aghwar regions through training courses for children and teachers in schools. Therefore, working with them in the CtC approach was related to the elder teaching the younger child. We also had specialised trainers, Palestinians and foreigners (from Save the Children – Sweden), who trained a group of volunteers and workers from our organisation and other organisations on using this approach and its six- step approach.
The other project is focused on developing and promoting the rights of the Palestinian girls and empowering her with skills to help her understand her identity and promote her participation in Palestinian public life. We trained groups of female students in schools on how to cope with hard political, social, and economic situations. They also received a thorough training about Children’s Rights and the CtC approach. Finally, a new project was started in 2004 which is the Children’s Rights and civil society project, through which a public committee of children was formed and a board of 7 children was elected (14-16 years) of both genders. These children had received a thorough training about Children’s Rights and started using it in identifying a group of subjects, especially physical violence against children. They immediately started working on a yearly plan for a national campaign that aims at the children, the organisations and the parliament.
Child-to-Child Activities
We are working now mainly in Bethlehem and Hebron in the West Bank where the organisation has branches. During the “Intifada” we opened into the Northern parts of the West Bank but temporarily. The direct beneficiaries of our work are children from both genders (between 12-17 years) and especially children living in hard situations in Palestinian camps, near the Israeli settlements and the regions that are frequently attacked. We are focusing now on children living near the “Wall” which includes large areas of the Palestinian territory.
Monitoring and evaluation of Child-to-Child activities
The evaluation mechanisms are done through workshops, debates, open evaluation by facilitators, children and coordinators, or through questions and forms, or through previous and later evaluation, in some projects.
Use of Child-to-Child materials
We use all the newsletters and products developed by UNICEF, ARC and Radda Barnen organisation, and lately we have been working with ARC’s manual “Trainer’s Pack” for working with children. All these materials have been translated from English into Arabic and their content has been adjusted to reflect the Arabic and Palestinian realities. We have developed a training manual about working with children and information packs about child abuse. We also worked on newsletters about mine awareness that express a real vision of children’s participation.
