Organisation of Child-To-Child Activities

In early 2001, Professor Anita Ghulam Ali, the Managing Director, SEF, approached AKU–IED to initiate a health education programme in the Community Supported Schools (CSS), after knowing of the successful experience of the Health Action Schools (HAS) Program of the Aga Khan University–Institute for Educational Development (AKU–IED). After an extensive process of collaboration between the SEF and AKU–IED, the health education programme was initiated in Community Supported Schools using the Child-to-Child (CtC) approach in February 2001. The objective of the Health Education Programme is to work for the betterment of the health environment and health services for the community through health education of SEF’s Community Supported Schools. It is believed that healthy children are happy and learn naturally. Therefore, the programme aims to achieve positive changes in children’s personal health, environment and impacts on families and communities.

Describing the Activities

At present 94 trained teachers in three districts of Sindh Province, Pakistan, are teaching health education to approximately 4,000 students in their schools using the Child-to-Child approach. The field team of the CSS programme is also trained in CtC and regularly monitors health education activities in their respective cluster areas. The teacher uses a four-step Child-to-Child methods in the class involving children at every step. Various vehicles such as stories, picture discussions, survey, role-plays, drama, puppet shows, etc. are used to ensure maximum participation of children in health education and awareness promotion (activities). Health education is taught as a separate subject and a weekly time slot is available for health education lessons. There are co-curricular activities in schools such as edutainment, interactive theatres, puppet shows, health talks and seminars.

Village Education Committees (VECs) have been formed to facilitate the management and monitoring of school based activities. The majority of members of VECs are parents of children enrolled in the school. Besides other responsibilities of VEC members are supporting teachers and children in health education activities such as organising action based learning, providing material for classroom teaching, and encouraging students to become promoters for health in their communities. VECs also provide financial support in the form of logistics and food arrangements for the events organised at community level.

Monitoring and evaluation of Child-to-Child activities

Monitoring activities of the Child-to-Child programme has been done on four levels.

  • At the classroom level by teachers and children,
  • At village level by VEC members and mothers’ group,
  • At cluster level by field based monitoring team,
  • At district level by monitoring and evaluation team of the SEF.

Use of Child-to-Child materials

We have used the Child-to-Child Resource Book’s translated version (in Urdu) Sehat Ki Batein (translated by AKU–IED) for developing lesson plans and health education manuals. We have developed three health education manuals/guides, so far consisting of 24 health topics in the local language (Sindhi). All these three manuals/guides are available on request.
