Relevant background information
David Werner, the Author of the widely-read books Where there is No Doctor, Helping Health Workers Learn and Disabled Village Children was one of those who supported and publicised the Child-to-Child approach from its inception. Much of his work and several projects which he founded, (still ongoing) were in Mexico.
Both Helping Health Workers Learn and Disabled Village Children have chapters especially devoted to Child-to-Child and have been translated into Spanish, Portuguese and many other languages. Both are available through TALC.
Niño a Niño
Small but dynamic programme working with children from marginalised communities in Oaxaca.
Activities started in 1990 and have continued vigorously. Funding is provided by many small organisations in Mexico and USA. Approximately 500 children aged 5-15 and twenty adults are involved. Activities take place out of school-time, mostly at weekends using a four-step approach and an active methodology involving many different child-centred activities all helping to help children think critically and creatively towards solving problems in their lives and environment. Child-to-Child materials are adapted, and locally produced guides are also used. Read more
Note 1
PROJIMO
Integrates disabled children in families and communities
PROJIMO is a project now aided by HealthWrights, an NGO founded by David Werner. The project as a whole is devoted to helping the disabled improve their quality of life and integrate in society. As part of its work it advocates a Child-to-Child methodology described in the relevant chapter of Disabled Village Children (sold by TALC). The current activities and status of PROJIMO (it has recently moved its activities) is told on their website which also gives details of further relevant publications, including videos.
