ORGANISATION OF CHILD-TO-CHILD ACTIVITIES

The CtC activities started this year. The teachers and grades 1-6 Elementary level students are effectively involved in the program.

BENEFICIARIES OF THE ACTIVITIES

The total number of participating students amounts to 112 in addition to the teachers, thus approximately reaching 117 participants.

DESCRIBING THE ACTIVITIES

The main aim behind the program is to shed light or increase awareness in the environment. The activities also aim at activating the role of the child and contributing to change in the environment. The health focus of these activities has been varied. First and second grade students dealt with hygiene practices, specifically hand-washing. Third and fourth grade students tackled healthy food, mainly vitamin constituents of food and their effect on health. Grade 5 students spoke about cooperative learning and grade 6 students tackled tolerance as their main health topic.

HOW CHILDREN'S PARTICIPATION IS ENCOURAGED

The Child-to-Child activities are exclusively integrated for now through teaching at school, through various teaching tools. These include: story-telling, reporting, and implementing activities that help introduce others to the health topics that are tackled within the program. We have also tried to implement the six steps of the CtC approach, which have been revised and amended based on needs during execution of the CtC activities.

HEALTH IN AND OUT OF SCHOOL

The implemented activities are educational and sometimes tied to the teaching educational objectives

MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF CHILD-TO-CHILD ACTIVITIES

We have noticed a remarkable improvement in children’s behavioural conduct especially when executing child-to-child activities. More than one evaluation tool have been used to measure such an improvement, mainly through the use of a self-evaluation checklist. Students manage to evaluate their skills acquisition and how it added to their overall well-being.

TRAINING ACTIVITIES

Trainees are more often practitioners and children participating in the CtC program. We have exempted others at this point only because we are still in the preliminary phase of program implementation. We will work on generalizing the program onto other practitioners at school in order to maximize benefit.

USE OF CHILD-TO-CHILD MATERIALS

We are using the CtC resources that ARC is providing us with in Arabic. Examples of such resources include: children for health, facilitator’s kit, activity sheets, and ideas for working with people among others.
