PLAN International Guinea

There has been a very interesting Child-to-Child programme in the Forest area of Guinea-Conakry (Guinea-Forestière) for several years. Almost 80 schools are involved, despite recent incursions from Liberia. PLAN International Guinea has provided substantial support for these activities, and employs several people as full-time Child-to-Child supervisors. The task of these supervisors is to support the schools and teachers in every possible way. In effect, they visit all schools at least once a month and provide the teachers in those schools (they have recently moved to a whole-school approach) with their initial Child-to-Child training and follow this up with regular in-service training.
The programme has recently changed and expanded and the first results are excellent. Future plans include a much closer relationship with families and communities. At present many PLAN staff are also involved in monitoring and evaluation, so a discussion of indicators was felt to be very helpful during this workshop.
In most of the Child-to-Child schools, children had done community surveys to establish the most important health problems and almost unanimously identified malaria and diarrhoea. In fact, the knowledge, skills and attitudes that we would expect children to acquire would depend on the topic/s being explored with them.”
