Note 1
Link schools with Development Direct
A number of primary schools in Gambia take part in the ‘Just Like You’ Programme supported by Development Direct in which schools in Northumberland and in Gambia both read certain Child-to-Child story books and exchange views about their relevance to health in their communities. Development Direct sends out the readers to Gambia. The Gambia programme has been in operation for three years. The work of Development Direct is described under the UK entry in this directory.

Note 2
Catholic Education Services
In 2000, it was reported that the Catholic Mission had been organising Child-to-Child activities in 5 primary schools in Banjul, Gambia since 1996. The main purpose of the programme was to supplement the school health education and promotion components of the school curriculum which were inadequate and funding was provided by Catholic Relief Services. Some 10,000 primary school children and 370 teachers were involved and other areas focused on were the promotion of the rights of children, and in particular girls. Child-to-Child activities were introduced through classroom teaching and other activities, jointly organised with Red Cross, environmental clubs and health clubs. Health was taught as part of science and social studies, but the programme was advocating for its recognition as a separate subject in the curriculum. Teachers have been trained in the Child-to-Child approach by educationists and nurses and several Child-to-Child materials such as the activity sheets and readers have been adapted. An update of activities is being sought.
