Relevant background information

Child-to-Child’s history in Egypt started in 1988. Since then, a few short-lived pilot programmes experimenting with Child-to-Child approaches have existed, such as the school-based programme in Bayad El Arab and El Hamaria Primary Schools (1988-1990), supported by the Institute of Cultural Affairs, Belgium and the Hand-in-Hand for Better Health programme started in the Geziera Youth Club in Cairo (1996). An important initiative and series of publications took place in 1990 when the WHO office for the Eastern Mediterranean region, located in Alexandria, initiated a prototype Action Orientated Health Curriculum for use in their region. Several countries took it up including Egypt, Syria and Lebanon and it had a substantial impact on subsequent materials and programmes of study. Resource books were printed in both English and Arabic organised by themes and including both background information and suggestions for methodology. The current Child-to-Child activities were major sources for these books and a number of these were imported into the text. The resources remain available both in Child-to-Child, London and at the Child-to-Child centre at the Arab Resource Collective in Beirut.

Association for Upper Egypt

In 1990, the Association for Upper Egypt started Child-to-Child activities in the 36 schools they worked with in low-income urban and rural areas. The three main aims of the programme were to make children more effective in their communities, to facilitate children's recognition of the health problems in their communities, and to apply the Child-to-Child six-step approach. Hence, the Child-to-Child step approach, readers and Resource Books were used to train teachers and carry out after-school activities. As of 2005, the programme is reported to be active, and details of its current activities will be updated when they become available.

Date: 2000. Updated information awaited.
