The following report made in 2001 is still valid
Organisation
“Our activities began in 1990. We provide the funding for activities. However, we obtain support from international agencies in our work. Our activities take place in a rural context. The participating children are based in local primary schools. 24 schools and 8,000 children are involved in the activities. Adult workers involved in the Child-to-Child work include primary school teachers and community development workers, etc.
Child-to-Child Activities
Our aim is simply to improve the health of the child. We do this through our broader aims, which are as follows:
1. The study and testing of educational material, adapted to suit local needs;
2. The study and testing of books and manuals, again adapted to suit local circumstances;
3. The production of educational material (partly by local people);
4. The distribution of the above materials at affordable prices to the local population;
5. On-site training of development workers and health animators.
Activities are introduced through classroom teaching. We use the six-step approach when implementing activities.
Training
We provide training in Child-to-Child methods for children and teachers.
Use, Adaptation, Translation and Production of Child-to-Child Materials:
We use Child-to-Child materials as part of our activities. We have also produced local editions of Child-to-Child readers originally produced by l'Enfant pour l'Enfant in Paris. The titles are:
1. Surveillons les Petits (Les Accidents);
2. Halte aux Maladies! (Les Vaccinations)
3. Mon Petit Frère est Malade (La Diarrhée);
4. Le Jeune Homme et le Dragon (Les Vers Parasites);
5. Aziza n'est Plus Triste (Les Enfants Handicapes);
6. Sonko-le-Lièvre, Arracheur de Dents (Les Dents);
7. Le Vieux Roi et la Petite Fiancée (L'alimentation des Bébés);
8. Le Lièvre Musicien (La Rehydration Orale).”
In addition the following new information is recorded from the beginning of 2005:
- In addition to the readers which are still widely used five plays have been written focusing on AIDS and Malaria, as well as three cassettes on Sleeping Sickness, TB and HIV/AIDS.
- Activities in primary schools have extended to schools within 35 kilometres of Kangu.
- Further modifications of materials are being made to serve centres in Kole (Kasai), Boma (bas Congo) and Gemena (Nord du Congo).
- With the imminent departure of Dr. Courtejoie, an inspiration for the centre over the last decade, a search is being made for a worthy successor.
