Relevant background information
Apart from the important Youth-to-Youth programmes reported below Save the Children Canada has also been involved in supporting and advising numerous programmes outside Canada especially in West Africa and Central America.
The Canadian External Aid bureau, CIDA, has given large-scale assistance for teacher educators from Zambia and the Research Agency, IDRC, advises and publishes materials on Children as Health Promoters. Save the Children Canada
Youth-to-Youth programme focusing particularly on the promotion of children’s rights
This programme focuses on child rights and aims specifically to develop the ability of young people under 18 to participate in the improvement of the community and their own lives in meaningful ways. It operates across Canada both in rural and urban areas with youth of all backgrounds. There are links with other Child-to-Child programmes worldwide. Activities take place outside school in clubs and SCF trains young people (13-18) as facilitators to work with younger participants. Emphasis is placed on getting children and young people to identify and solve problems and evaluate outcomes. The six-step approach is being used, and evaluation tools which can be used by the young people have been developed. Read more
