Organisation
Activities began in March 1989 with twenty children. Currently the NGO supports five children’s groups and over two hundred children. Activities include:
- Children’s drama aimed to heighten national awareness of health and social problems, to advocate action and to illuminate children’s problems.
- A children’s library to enable poor children to have access to books.
- Holiday camps to experience the joys of travelling and to open new horizons for children from deprived environments.
- Radio programmes to raise popular awareness of the Rights of the Child.
All these activities are made possible through resources of an NGO (RODIE) concerned with promoting integrated development of children.
Children and Adults involved in the activities
Adults provide support and reassurance for children, also facilitate activities and handle all administration. The core team from SURVIE are helped by volunteers from the community. When particular expertise is needed it is identified and bought in.
The main aims of Child-to-Child
To:
- awaken the conscience of society,
- help change dangerous or risky behaviours,
- involve children at their own level as partners in development,
- educate the community,
- exert pressure on political leaders,
- contribute towards sound laws and regulations (for the development and protection of children).
Priority Areas
Include:
General promotion of good health and education, children’s rights and environmental protection, sound government with free and fair elections. Also, more specifically, actions related to HIV/AIDS awareness, malaria, and the supply of clean safe water; rewards to encourage the best children in the groups.
Monitoring and evaluation of activities
Activities are monitored by the core team of adults which also evaluates frequently and at different levels. When children take part in government-sponsored projects they are carefully evaluated.
Training
Funds are sought for training core workers. Sponsors are also sought and found to support school fees and expenses for poor children, especially orphans who are members of the children’s clubs .
Perspectives for the future
In view of the success of current activities Survie seeks to extend its work. In particular it seeks to share experience with other agencies in which children seek to promote development; one example would be to link with Child-to-Child programmes in countries in the North.
