Organisation of Child-to-Child Activities

Child-to-Child activities began in 1996. BFES provides training support to, and collaborates with, partner NGOs who implement CtC with materials supplied by BFES. Currently, BFES is supporting 33 formal schools in order that quality may be improved in the area of teachers' training related to use of CtC communication materials. Funding for BFES activities is provided by the government of Japan, the Royal Netherlands government and the Children Trust.

Most of the children we work with are from rural areas. About 1,500 children are involved in the activities. These are mostly of primary school age, though adolescents are also involved. All of the participating children are from poor families. Teachers participate as Coordinators and BFES Field Workers are also involved as Supervisors.

Child-to-Child Activities: The main purpose of the CtC activities is to improve the quality of rural community education. BFES is committed to gender equality. Men and women, girls and boys therefore participate equally in the CtC programme.

Although some activities take place in schools, CtC is not part of the formal curriculum. Consequently, the programme itself mainly runs outside of school hours. 7 of the 33 schools involved in the programme have a pilot school health action programme.

Community leaders and parents participate as co-learners in the activities. Orientation and training is designed for parents so that they can participate fully in these roles.

Monitoring and Training

The programme personnel carry out continuous monitoring and evaluation.

Training is provided by project staff and CtC network members for all groups involved in the programme. The content of the training reflects the CtC approach developed by the Child-to-Child Trust.

Use, Adaptation, Translation and Production of Child-to-Child Materials

Some CtC activity sheets have been translated into Bangla. The NGO has also developed a set of materials on the Environment and Nature Conservation, using the CtC approach and with assistance from BGD-UNDP-IUCN have now developed a curriculum for wetland management
