Relevant background information
With more landmines than children Angola has been one of the major targets of the UNICEF mine awareness programme. Other NGOs, such as Canada’s CIDA, support the national programme and describe Child-to-Child approaches as an important component. The national programme incorporated into the school curriculum credits Child-to-Child materials as a resource. The International Guidelines for Landmine
Unexploded Ordnance [UXO] Awareness Education drawn up by a group which included a consultant, Clare Hanbury from Child-to-Child, is widely used.
Angola is also a part of the Child-to-Child radio network, again supported by UNICEF, and described in this directory under our Mozambique entry.

Note
Reader
Five Friends of the Sun
This Child-to-Child reader on the subject of Landmines and UXO is set in an Angolan context. It has been written to suit children aged 11-14. In addition to its relevance in Africa, it may be particularly suitable for use in schools in Europe in order to highlight issues regarding landmines.
As with other Child-to-Child readers the book is published by Longman.
