Organisation of Child-to-Child Activities
Our Child-to-Child activities began in 1995 in Cambodia and 1997 in Vietnam. Activities take place in three organisational contexts: 1. Within the context of EED-implemented development projects: through local partners and institutions such as primary schools, non-formal early childhood centres, health centres, and non-formal education programmes. 2. Through a recently founded local organisation (NGO) in Cambodia. 3. Through workshops and training sessions aimed at NGO (local and international staff) and government personnel. Funding is mostly provided by our own organisation, with some funding obtained from other sources, e.g., EC, French ODA, other NGOs, private funds etc.
Children and Adult Personnel Involved in Child-to-Child Activities
In Cambodia, the participating children are ethnic Khmer boys and girls, of pre-school age (2-5 years), and of primary school age (6-12 years), as well as adolescents in literacy programmes. In Vietnam, the children are ethnic Vietnamese (Kinh) and as of September 2000, ethnic Hmang also. Again, they are either of pre-school age (2-5 years) or primary school age (6-12 years). All of the children can be considered disadvantaged in the sense that we work with poor communities. Otherwise, specifically disadvantaged children are not targeted. Adult workers involved in the activities are pre-school and primary school teachers, non-formal teachers and community health workers.
The Child-to-Child Activities
The main purposes of our activities are:
1. To promote good health practice.
2. To enable children to participate meaningfully in their own development and community development. Two areas of interest for us are inclusive education and the promotion of children's rights.
Child-to-Child activities aim to develop self-confidence and a feeling of self-worth in children, through the development of practical, cognitive and communication skills.
We are working towards Child-to-Child becoming an integral part of the school curriculum and philosophy, but this has yet to take the shape of a formal, stated initiative. 3 primary schools located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, and 2 primary schools in rural communes of Takeo province, are involved in the activities.
Training
We train:
1. Children (Health Clubs in Phnom Penh schools).
2. Primary and pre-school teachers.
3. NGO and government staff interested in pursuing Child-to-Child activities. Training is conducted by EED staff and more recently, the staff of the local Khmer NGO, Sovannn Phoum, founded by former EED personnel. The content of training events is focused on basic health knowledge, participatory methodology, and Child-to-Child methodology, with much emphasis on exploitation of educational materials (storybooks...).
Use, Adaptation, Translation and Production of Child-to-Child Materials
We use mainly storybooks (readers). The majority of the Child-to-Child materials we use are produced by the Institute Sante et Developpement in Paris. We have adapted many of these French language materials for use locally. We have also translated three of the English language Child-to-Child readers into Vietnamese: Deadly Habits; Flies; and Teaching Thomas.
