About the programme
The support for the Radio Mozambique child-to-child programme started in 2000. The activities are organised and implemented by children with the support of designated adult staff. Health and education staff members are involved on regular basis as service providers, as required, depending on the theme addressed. The programme is established and produced in all country provinces. Currently there are 265 children producing and presenting child-to-child radio programmes in all 11 provinces. The RM sign covers around 75% of the national territory. UNICEF provides technical, financial and material support to Radio Mozambique, and has done since 2000. Other institutions involved include the Ministry of Education, the National AIDS Council, among others.
Child-to-Child activities
The main focus is on promotion of children’s rights and HIV awareness among children and adolescents. Planning of activities is carried out in the children’s clubs and the actual production/broadcasting is done in the studio with the participation of the audience who provide input through phone calls. Programmes are also produced live from the districts and communities with the participation of school children and the community in general.
Encouraging child participation
Themes discussed during the programmes are searched and selected by the children themselves in meetings held in the children’s clubs. Short audience surveys are carried out to assess the impact of the radio programmes on the audience. These serve to inform the production of future quality radio programmes.
Involvement of schools and communities
Some of the themes discussed in school are also addressed in the radio programmes. Some of the examples are issues related to health, HIV prevention, etc.
The school clubs are linked to the child-to-child radio programme.
HIV prevention and life skills are some of the issues addressed by both the school clubs and the child-to-child radio programme.
Parents and communities are involved through participation in radio debates and live programmes.
