Getting Ready for School Update: Child-to-Child initiative in Ethiopia

The CtC session has enabled children to achieve their true potential. One father whose children, son Babina, enrolled in grade one at Dima Primary School for the academic year of Sept 2009, and younger daughter Mitu, who attends pre-primary class at Dima Primary School have both attended a CtC session. He said “My children are enthusiastic about the session, they are enjoying it and the speed at which they are progressing has impressed me much. I have full trust and confidence in my son’s future”.

The schools and teachers have been following the progress of the CtC young learners and facilitators are glad and ready to receive as many children as possible and continue the CtC implementation.

The Child-to-Child Initiative in Ethiopia is part of a pilot project, supported by UNICEF, in six countries: Bangladesh, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tajikistan, Yemen and Ethiopia. For more information please read more

The Child-to-Child Trust celebrates 30 years of Pioneering Children’s Participation with UNICEF Headquarters in New York

Tashmin Khamis - Child-to-Child DirectorAs part of Child-to-Child’s (CtC) 30th birthday anniversary, UNICEF HQ in New York invited the Child-to-Child Trust on 8th and 9th October to show-case its 30 years pioneering work in children’s participation in partnership with UNICEF.

To mark the occasion, a Seminar was held and was attended by Nick Alipui, Director of the Programme Division, Cream Wright, Associate Director and Global Chief of Education who chaired the function,  Nurpur Ulkuer, Chief of Early Childhood Development (ECD), Abhiyan Rana, Education Specialist on Early Learning and over 40 UNICEF staff.

The opening remarks by Nick Alipui, acknowledged Child-to-Child’s 30 years enduring legacy. He emphasised the importance of CtC in helping children to become agents of change by participating actively in transmitting and communicating vital health information. He highly commended the partnership between UNICEF and the Trust and called on CtC to “challenge UNICEF from becoming complacent but to think beyond where they are and come out of their comfort zone to bring about lasting change in children”.  Nick Alipui called on the Trust to support UNICEF to celebrate 20 years of the Convention on the Rights of the Child this year in a non-tokenistic way.

Nurpur Ulkuer the ECD chief shared her thoughts on CtC by saying that, “ CtC is the best way of ensuring child participation and children are best change agents” She continued that “CtC is a quiet curriculum reform, changing the mindset of teachers in a subtle way”

Hugh Hawes the co-founder of CtC who was also present, summed up the contribution of CtC in the past 30 years in four key areas. He said that CtC has contributed to:

  • The extension and deepening of the concept of primary health care.
  • Widening, deepening and sharpening the concept of school as a community and the role of children within that community particularly within the concept of Education for All.
  • Sharpening thinking around the concept of the school curriculum for basic education and the role of children’s action within that curriculum which are essential for our survival NOW.
  • The concept of active learning by promoting knowledge that goes beyond  understanding to action NOW thus bringing home and school learning closer together.
